The Clara Brown Commons

Clara Brown Commons is a mixed-income affordable housing community situated in the Cole neighborhood. The project is named after Clara Brown, known as the “Angel of the Rockies”. It consists of a four-story midrise with 61 apartments, utilizing the average-income test to accommodate families at 20%, 30%, 50%, 60%, and 80% of the area median income. The apartments are distributed as 14 one-bedroom, 28 two-bedroom, and 19 three-bedroom homes. The community's vision is summarized as: “Clara Brown Commons promotes belonging for residents and neighbors by creating a safe and caring community where we can stabilize our lives, expand our economic capacity, and deepen spiritual connectedness.”

On the south side of Clara Brown Commons, along Gaylord Street between 37th Avenue and 38th Avenue, there are 17 2-story townhouses built by Habitat for Humanity. These townhouses feature a variety of floor plans with 2, 3, and 4 bedroom units. They integrate into the overall design with detailed brick facades and street-facing covered porches, blending harmoniously with the scale and ambiance of the surrounding community.

Adjacent to the townhouses, facing York Street, the project includes plans for a community center. A central open space with shade trees, a playground, outdoor seating areas, and BBQ grills will serve as a communal gathering space for all residents.
